Chances for people with disabilities to participate in the global struggle against poverty Combating worldwide poverty has clearly gained in importance within the last years. Since the UN Millennium Summit of September 2000, this task has an important rank within the international development agenda. Combating poverty is of primary significance for people with disabilities living in developing coutries - and increasingly in the Eastern European transition countries - as the connexion between poverty and disability is particularly close in these regions. People living in absolute poverty, i.e. people who have less than 1 US-$ per day, are exceptionally affected by disability. These are about 240 Mio. people world-wide. Despite this striking relevance, disabled people are hardly covered by projects to combat poverty. Even the "Millennium Development Goals" passed at the Millennium Summit, targeting among other things at the reduction of poverty by half until year 2015, do not mention people with disabilities. This fact keeps disabled people widely excluded from the implementation of these targets. People with disabilites are part of their respective communities, and it's time they can equally participate in development projects. This is not just a question of human rights but also a matter of how sincerely the international development goals are being implemented, as they can only be met when this group of people is included. | |||||||||
